Salary:  $16.13-$17.93 per hour

General Definition of Work

Performs semiskilled work providing safe and dependable public transportation for citizens of the City and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Manager.

Essential Functions

Drives and operates bus on assigned routes according to an established time schedule.  Drives bus on charter trips as assigned.

Schedules runs and changes destination sign on bus as needed.

Operates lift for handicapped passengers in wheelchairs and assists elderly passengers and others in need of assistance.

Treats passengers in a courteous manner and provides information regarding bus schedules as requested.

Completes operator reports and vehicle checklists as required and submits maintenance slips for needed bus repairs as appropriate.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of specific traffic and safety laws and ability to abide by all provisions of these laws; knowledge of and ability to safely operate and drive buses in city and highway traffic, often under stressful external conditions, and in all types of weather; knowledge of city streets and established routes/schedules and ability to consistently maintain schedules as required; knowledge of and ability to properly operate two-way radio system; working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare detailed activity reports as required; ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements; ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with difficult persons; ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out verbal or written instructions; ability to apply knowledge of people and locations, make simple arithmetic additions/subtractions, and read/interpret detailed manuals, maps, and directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, department heads, other departments, and the general public.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED and minimal experience with driving passengers or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel and pushing or pulling, frequently requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather); work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

Receive and complete position-specific training within six months of hire.

Valid commercial driver's license with Class B and passenger endorsements in the State of Indiana.
