General Definition of Work

Performs manual work receiving and sorting waste and recyclable material for processing, bales recyclable material and organizes for storage, cleans equipment and machines to ensure proper operation, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the MRF Crew Leader and or the Collection and Recycling Manager.

Essential Functions

Empties glass and trash containers; sorts recycling material in separate bins by type.

Bales recycling material and stacks in storage area.

Cleans sorting machine, baler, and other equipment and vehicles.

Assists with collecting recycling material off trucks.

Assists with the collection of recycling materials on routes.

Operates heavy machinery to haul and move materials.

Occasionally operates non-CDL vehicles to assist with collection routes

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the practices and techniques of operating a material recovery facility; knowledge of recycle material properties and the safe handling of them; knowledge local, State, and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to the department; knowledge of the safe operation of light to medium construction equipment and vehicles; knowledge of various ordinances, codes and regulations pertaining to recycling and refuse materials; knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; knowledge of recycling routes; skill in excellent customer service; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; skill in the use of hand and power tools; skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to perform manual labor; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED required.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid driver's license in the State of Indiana.
