Schedule: Tuesday through Friday 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate semiskilled work utilizing heavy equipment and vehicles to aid in department operations, conducting preventative maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment, performing grounds and facilities maintenance, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Landfill Manager.

Essential Functions
Operates medium to heavy equipment and vehicles to assist with the daily operations of the City Landfill.
Monitors, receives, sorts, organizes, and grades incoming waste and recyclable material.
Grinds and clears brush around department facilities and grounds.
Moves trash cover and ensures waste material is covered.
Performs preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and vehicles.
Monitors and clears city roadways of debris.
Mows and maintains department facility grounds.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the practices and techniques of operating a landfill; thorough knowledge of recycle material properties and the safe handling of them; thorough knowledge local, State, and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to the department; thorough knowledge of the safe operation of light to medium construction equipment and vehicles; thorough knowledge of various ordinances, codes and regulations pertaining to recycling and refuse materials; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; skill in excellent customer service; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; skill in the use of hand and power tools; skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to perform manual labor; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED and moderate experience operating heavy equipment and vehicles used by the sanitation industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling and occasionally requires standing, walking and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
Special Requirements
Valid commercial driver's license with Class B endorsement in the State of Indiana.
Possess a tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain the endorsement within one year.
