PARKS DEPARTMENT HOSTS PARKS CLEANUP SERIES

RICHMOND, IN. – The Richmond Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the community to participate in their Parks 2020 Cleanup Series spanning from this Saturday, July 25 to November 7th. This Cleanup Series brings together volunteers from across the community to work together to pick up litter that has accumulated over the season, remove invasive plant species, and provides a way for citizens to feel the pride of giving back to their community.

This Saturday kicks off the Parks Department Cleanup Series at the Whitewater Gorge. Volunteers at this first cleanup will work together to clean roads and trails such as Sim Hodgin Parkway, Hub Etchinson Parkway, Bridge Avenue, the Whitewater Gorge Trail, and the Cardinal Greenway. Altogether, the series will serve not only the Gorge, but also Middlefork Reservoir and Glen Miller Park.

Park Superintendent Denise Retz encourages all community members to take advantage of this opportunity, saying “Volunteering in the Parks 2020 Cleanup Series is a wonderful way to give back to the Richmond community, social distance, and keep our parks healthy and safe.”

The first Gorge Cleanup will begin at 1pm on Saturday, with check-in starting at 12:30pm at the Bicentennial Park Maintenance Garage located at 30 Bridge Avenue. The event will run until approximately 3pm and will take place rain or shine. There will be another cleanup held at the Gorge on August 15th, as well as a cleanup at the Reservoir on September 19th and two cleanups at Glen Miller on October 17th and November 7th.

Social distancing and other prevention measures will be in place to stop the spread of COVID-19. Closed-toe shoes will be required and masks or face coverings are highly recommended, especially during check-in. Snacks, water, gloves, bags, and tools will be provided.
