Mission Statement:
The Community Council on Disability Awareness of Wayne County, Indiana strives to increase public awarenessof issues affecting persons with disabilities in order to promote opportunity, acceptance, respect, and independence leading to full community inclusion for all persons with disabilities.
Values:
We support policies both public and private that demonstrate:
· acceptance, community integration, equality, respect and compassion for all people with disabilities
· opportunity for self-direction, independence, and full community inclusion for people with disabilities
Activities:
Ø David Gerwig – Carol Patterson Annual Disability Awareness Awards Program - Recognizing community members, businesses and organizations are for their achievements and contributions in the community which reflect the values of the CCDA
Ø WCTV Television Production, “A Closer Look” – presenting disability related topics to the general public in the WCTV viewing area.
Ø Monthly Palladium-Item Column – providing news and discussion of topics relevant to persons with disabilities

25TH ANNUAL DISABILITY AWARENESS AWARDS PROGRAM was held on March 19, 2009 at the First English Lutheran Church
Guest Speaker – Jackie Speicher, Service Coordinator, Independent Living Center of Eastern Indiana. Jackie works with people 55 and older who have visual impairments and who seek ways to continue being fully involved in all that life has to offer.
Entertainment was provided by the Lowell Conley Trio Lowell Conley – piano, Ray Slick – bass, and Bonnie Slick – drums

IN MEMORIAM
ROGER BUCHER was a Charter member of the CCDA and often served as master of ceremony for this awards program. He brought dignity and humor to the task.
DELISA KAY FERGUSON was a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in Richmond. She was a member of the CCDA and was loved and respected by colleagues and consumers alike.
DAVID GERWIG was President of the CCDA and a co-founder of the Independent Living Center in Richmond. He was a champion for independence and human rights until his death in October of 2004.
CAROL PATTERSON was active in local and state disability issues. She also was a pioneer in the effort to establish the Independent Living Center in Richmond until her death in 1994.
TIM THISTLEWAITE was a past President of the CCDA and a strong advocate for accessibility for persons
